Hi and welcome to lesson 2 of 10 for my course, “How to grow cannabis indoors.” In this lesson I’ll review all the items you need to grow indoors, and tell you how to set up your equipment.
All links mentioned in this video can be found in the video description, along with a link to Indica Institute where you can find a growing list of cannabis related courses and recommendations on the best products for purchase. I’d also like to give a special thanks to my partners at FourBudz grow equipment for supporting free cannabis education. You can check them out at fourbudz.com.
Now that you’ve purchased all the recommended equipment, it is time to make sure you set it all up properly for the best results. If you haven’t purchased all the equipment, or want to review the equipment list to ensure you have it all, check out my equipment course by clicking the link in the description. The main learning objectives of this lesson are to review the tools and equipment required to grow indoors, and to learn how to properly set up your grow space. A typical grow space should have: A grow tent, or enclosed space with light reflecting walls, Lighting, like an LED, CFL or HID setup, At least 1 Carbon Filter, At least 1 Fan, And Pots for soil or a Hydroponic system. Some other tools recommended for the basic maintenance of your plants are: A pH testing kit, A thermo hygrometer, A nutrient kit, An automatic timer for your lighting, Grow pods for seed germination, Soil, unless using a hydroponic system, Trellis netting for plant training, And a power bar with a surge protector.
When setting up your equipment, your first step is to set the tent up in a way that will allow for the maximum amount of airflow possible. There should be an easy flow of air from an air intake on one side of the tent to your carbon filter on the other side of your tent. Place your fan near the intake to promote airflow. Keep in mind that as your plants grow you will need to adjust the fan in a way that is constantly rustling the leaves at the top of your plants. Also, do not point your fan directly at your plants. This could cause wind burn.
Place your pots or hydroponic system at the bottom of your tent, preferably in some kind of waterproof drip tray so any spilled soil, water or nutrient solution can be easily cleaned up. Be sure to clean your drip tray regularly to keep your grow environment bacteria free and plants healthy.
Your next step is to hang your lighting from the top of your grow tent. Your typical LED light should hang about 18 inches from your plant canopy, but light strength varies by manufacturer so if you’re not sure, contact the manufacturer or see the description I have given for the equipment I recommended. My FourBudz pro3 hangs 18” from plant canopy at all times, I just adjust intensity settings based on growth stage.
If you are using CFL lighting this setup will require constant adjustment, so check on your plants daily and make sure the bulbs are about 6 inches from your plant maximum. If you opted for HID lighting, the distance your plant should be from the light depends on the wattage of your bulb. Honestly, the quickest solution to gauge whether your HID light is too close is to use the hand test. Place your hand just above the top of your plant canopy for 8-12 seconds. If your hand starts to burn, your light is too close to your plants.
So in review, place your grow tent in an area that has good ventilation, and adjust your fans to promote healthy airflow. Place your pots or hydroponic setup in a drip tray so it’s easy to clean up your grow space regularly. Also ensure that your lighting is the right distance away from your plants, so they won’t burn but will still get enough light to grow properly.
Now that your grow environment is set up, it is time to start germinating your seeds. For the next lesson you will need your seeds, a pH testing kit, lighting and grow pods.
