Welcome to Lesson 6, where I will explain the importance of healthy air circulation in your grow space. I will also review the options you have in order to keep your plants breathing healthy.
The main objectives of this lesson are to learn (a) why your plants will benefit from healthy air circulation (b) what your options are to obtain this, and (c) where you can find the equipment for purchase.
No matter the size of your garden, it is always important to maintain good air circulation to promote strong plant growth. Your plant needs a constant fresh supply of carbon dioxide to convert into energy, so without it your plant will not be able to feed and eventually die. A secondary benefit of good air circulation is that the added wind strengthens your plants limbs, making them thicker and able to support a larger yield at harvest.
There are a few ways to ensure your plant is getting the air circulation it needs. The first way is to have one or more oscillating fans in your grow space. How many fans you need and their size will depend on the size of your grow space. The end goal is that the leaves at the top of all your plants should be rustling. Just make sure the fan is not pointed directly at your plants to avoid ‘wind burn.’
A second way you can ensure your grow space has good airflow is to install an exhaust fan. This ensures that the air being circulated within your grow space can escape once it has been used by your plants. Having a proper exhaust fan also works to pull fresh new air into your grow space to fill the void. Just make sure when purchasing an exhaust fan, that it has the same diameter as the exhaust vents in your grow space. You can find proper vent fan and oscillating fan recommendations by clicking here.
So to recap, your plants need a healthy and regular supply of carbon dioxide to survive. It’s therefore important to install one or more oscillating fans in your grow space, and a vent fan to ensure used air is escaping the space and not suffocating your plants. That concludes lesson 6 on air circulation. In lesson 7 I will be discussing the cheap, basic, but necessary equipment you will need to operate your grow space efficiently.
